This weekend a snorkeler was puttering around the waters around Catalina Island when a remarkable sight appeared: the carcass of a recently-deceased 18 foot-long oarfish. These amazing creatures live in the ocean's depths, and occasionally wash up after they die. Also known as the "King of Herrings," the oarfish is considered to be the root of many stories of sea serpents.
