Top brands like Star, Whole Foods, and Bertolli failed the test
Most "extra virgin olive oil" isn't
In a recent series of tests, researchers at UC-Davis tested a ton of olive oil brands to find out if they were truly extra virgin. Surprise: most of the brands failed the test, and were shown to contain adulturants. In fact, 69% of the brands they tested proved to be fraudulently labeled. One brand which did pass? Costco's Kirkland brand EVOO.
Wondering if your olive oil is fake or the real thing? Pour a little bit into a bowl and refrigerate it for 24-48 hours. If it crystalizes, it's extra virgin. if it forms a whole solid lump, then it's fake.
