David Garrard looking to return to NFL action on the Jets' roster.

Jets shake up the quarterback position

The 2012-13 season was definitely a forgettable one for the New York Jets. Rex Ryan prefaced the season with a lot of dumb words, Mark Sanchez played himself redundant and the Tim Tebow-project absolutely failed. The Jets really have no positives to look back on during their long off-season break. The only thing they have to look forward to is hoping that next season doesn't end with a mediocre record and no trip to the post season. How are the Jets going about turning the ship around? Their answer may lie with 35-year-old veteran quarterback David Garrard.

According to sources, this week the New York Jets and David Garrard have been in talks about putting together a deal that would bring him to the team. With the Jets having cleared cap space this off-season by releasing Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Eric Smith and Jason Smith. The team has right around $8 million left before heading into luxury tax territory.

While Garrard has had a great career in the NFL, having thrown for 16,003 yards, 89 touchdowns and 54 interceptions, the big question mark surrounding him is injury. After ending his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2010, Garrard has yet to play a game since. He spent last off-season with the Miami Dolphins, but after sustaining a knee injury, he missed the entire season.

While the Jets definitely have some areas to address, the move to bring Garrard in is an interesting one. The Jets already have Mark Sanchez, Greg McElroy, Matt Simms and Tim Tebow on their roster. It is widely believed that Tebow will be released this off-season, but that still leaves four QBs on the team. With McElroy and Sanchez vying for the starting spot last season, it will be interesting to see how Garrard will shake up the mix if the deal goes through. Will this be the break the New York Jets are looking for?
