It's a 'Party Down' reunion!
So, while we were all frittering our weekends away doing mindless but necessary things like laundry, snoozing through the Grammy Awards and shoveling mega-loads of snow, a Party Down reunion happened. Before you go jumping up and down freaking out thinking this gem of a show is coming back, sorry, it isn't. But the original cast members of this Starz comedy did get together at SF Sketchfest. At least that's something!
If you're scratching your head right now, you need to know that Party Down is brilliant. It was one of the best, quirkiest comedies on television, boasting a stellar cast that included Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, Ken Marino, Martin Starr and Ryan Hansen. Tragically, it was canceled in 2010 after a mere 20 episodes. I actually discovered Party Down via Netflix streaming a while back. Unfortunately, at last check it isn't streaming anymore, but get the DVDs. You'll thank me.
If you're a fan of Arrested Development, I feel almost certain you'll fall for Party Down, if that helps any. And, like Arrested Development, the show has a serious cult appeal (no doubt helped a great deal by Netflix). As such, is it any wonder that the biggest question brought forth during Saturday night's Party Down reunion (which included every single one of the aforementioned PD stars) was...wait for it...you know what's coming...
When is a Party Down movie going to happen?!
It's a natural leap. How long did we beg for an Arrested Development movie before the project got off the ground? Yes, eons. I'm doing the same with Party Down, and I refuse to give up. My desire for a Party Down movie supersedes even a Wet Hot American Summer movie sequel, and believe me, that's saying something.
I could geek out right now and start throwing in all sorts of inside Party Down references, but I hate when people do that if I'm not in on the joke. Just please see this show at some point, OK? Then we can all sit around here and discuss the magic together.
Adam Scott answered simply and honestly when asked about a possible Party Down movie, saying "We don't know." That doesn't mean "no," so fans (like me) are going to keep hoping. In the meantime, if you haven't seen Party Down, figure out a way to watch it, whether it's ordering the discs on Netflix or just buy seasons one and two on Amazon.
Anyone else out there holding out hope for a Party Down film?
