Balinese people are incredible.

Initial reaction to Kuta: Take II

The small island of Bali is a must-see destination while visiting Indonesia. Though it is the most popular of the islands, and definitely is inundated with tourists, the fact is, it is awesome. Bali offers amazing coastal views, beautiful and lush Asian countryside, as well as a look into Balinese-Hindu culture. While this is all true, one has to question a visit to the storied party-place known as Kuta.

Though my initial reaction to Kuta wasn't a fond one, I think after spending 36 hours in the city, my view changed. Though it isn't what is offered in Kuta that changed my mind (the streets are still filled with western stores and western drunks), but spending some time wandering the city is what made me realize that there are worst tourists hotbeds to visit.

While strolling along the streets of Kuta, one can easily forget they are on the lone Hindu island in a predominately Muslim country. In fact, with the abundance of western chain restaurants and stores, as well as small side street shops selling NBA, AFL and European soccer jerseys, one could easily forget where they are visiting. But if you look a bit closer, it is easy to realize that the western influence hasn't stamped out Balinese culture entirely, and definitely can't stamp out the kindness innate in those who call Bali home.

While I’m not saying one should spend time in Kuta (that is up to your own choosing) what I can say is that unlike touristy places in Thailand and Laos, the Balinese people are still overtly friendly, keen to actually meet travelers and not anywhere near giving up their culture and religious practices. This, unfortunately, was not my take on places like Southern Thailand or Vang Viene. Western influence had done a horrible number, and while I’m not entirely sure what has happened to Kuta can be perceived as positive, the Balinese people are still Balinese people. Kuta may be a chaotic, disgusting place, but the people of Bali still shine bright enough to make it a worthy destination.
