Cooking nutritious meals for your family while on a budget.

Frugal recipe resources

I've written a couple of times before about how groceries can really cause you to eat into your family budget (no pun intended). Coming from a home where money was very tight as a kid, I know how to stretch a grocery budget and make meals cheaply. Unfortunately, those tricks I learned back then weren't always the most nutritious. Thankfully, the Internet is full of creative and health conscious people who also need to save a few dollars now and then. These sites are great resources for meal planning and cooking frugally.

$5 Dinners: Five bucks for a dinner may sound expensive to the true cheapskates out there (and I mean that lovingly). For most people that's a steal, especially if you're cooking for a family. This site is chock full of recipe ideas to create dinners for around $5. They even have grilled foods, slow cooker meals, vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free options for those who need to be particularly careful. My absolute favorite "recipes" on there are the $5 dinners for babies where the goal is to make lunch and dinner for your baby for a week for just $5. I found these a little late in the game with my son, but I'll definitely use them next time.

Miserly Moms: The name of the site gives it away, doesn't it? These miserly moms know how to whip up a frugal, tasty meal in a flash. The listings include recipes for breakfasts, main dishes, side dishes, soups, desserts and drinks. Check out the side dishes for some tasty salsa recipes and appetizer-type foods if you plan on having a get together.

Hillbilly Housewife: You can't talk about frugal recipes without talking about the Hillbilly Housewife. I like her recipes in particular because most of her cooking is done from scratch. The less processing food has, the better it is for you and your wallet. My favorite sections of this site are the crockpot recipes for saving time and the soup recipes because, well, soup is my favorite food.
