Free audiobooks for children
Are you tired of listening to mind-numbing children's songs or Justin Bieberish artists on your road trips with your kids? How about a good story instead? Back in the day, audio books on CDs or cassette tapes (remember those?) could cost a pretty penny. With the advent of MP3 players, they're much cheaper, and in this case, absolutely free. Now that's affordable entertainment! Here are three sites where you can find children's audiobooks for free that both you and your children will love listening to.
Books Should Be Free: This site offers free audiobooks and eBooks for works that are now in the public domain. You're actually not limited to children's books here; there are books of nearly all genres. The kid's titles include classics like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Anne of Green Gables, Treasure Island, Pinocchio and many of my favorites from childhood. There are also sections for Fairy Tales and Teen/Young Adult. Some of these overlap with other categories. You can download these audio books for your iPhone, Android and other MP3 devices.
Librivox: Librivox is much like Books Should Be Free in that their offerings are from books that are in the public domain. This site also has more than kids' books; many genres are represented. Volunteers record chapters of books and make their offerings available for free. With audiobooks, the voice of the reader is very important. You may want to try a couple of sites for books in the public domain to see which actor's voice you like best before downloading.
Storynory: This is one of my favorites for audio stories because they also have original stories. Some of them are very sweet. Many of them are series of books involving the same characters, which is perfect for children who like following characters through several stories. There are also one-offs. Like the other sites, this one includes Fairytales and Classics from the public domain. There is also a small offering of nursery rhymes for very young children.
