Fish and chips anyone?
If you ever find yourself in a town that prides itself on seafood, you best believe you are going to find good fish and chips. Sure, it may vary from place to place, but regardless, you are going to find some great fried pieces of fish served with some hearty fried potatoes. Now, imagine an entire country who loves seafood, has a culture very similar to the Brits (who gave us fish and chips) and places the majority of their population and industry along thousands of kilometers of coastline. If you can picture this beautiful place, there is a good bet you are thinking of Australia.
While fish and chips are in great abundance, not every place offers something edible, let alone mouth watering. So how does one find the right dining area to imbibe in the traditional favorite? First off, in Australia, lunch and dinner deals are the way to go. If you are in a coastal town and want the F and C, you need to find a place offering it as a special. If it is above or below $10 for lunch, it isn't going to be good. The higher price means the place is trying to screw you, and the low-baller means the fish is crap. For dinner, between $12-$15 is your standard area.
Along with the price range, location means everything. Each town definitely has a pub, and finding one with great pub fare usually isn't too hard. Pubs who advertise fish and chips and are also filled with local clientele are a good start. Along with this, close proximity to the coast and deals with local fisherman are safe bets as well. Many towns have multiple locations meeting these criteria, so finding honest looking locals for word-of-mouth reviews is safe practice.
Enjoy dining on the local cuisine, and make sure to throw some vegetables in that diet once in awhile!
