Fall Out Boy is back to "Save Rock and Roll"

Monday started out with a bang for fans of the pop punk band Fall Out Boy. After a three-year hiatus, the band announced a new album and tour and dropped a new single. The news sent shock waves through the social media universe, with everyone offering opinions. My Facebook timeline lit up so quickly I couldn't keep track of all the comments (good and bad). For those of you who thought emo was dead, guess what? It isn't. And I'm not sure if that's a positive thing.

I've spent the better part of the day listening to Fall Out Boy's new song, "My Songs Know What You Did In the Dark (Light Em Up)." Apparently, so did everyone else. At last check, the single was number two on iTunes, and I suspect it might wind up in the top spot before tomorrow. I was a casual FOB fan, and as such I'll tell you that it's not my favorite tune from them. It might grow on me, or it might make my ears begin to bleed.

Fall Out Boy's new album, Save Rock and Roll, is due out in early May. We'll probably get another song release before then, so if you have FOB-obsessed friends, prepare yourself. Since we last heard new Fall Out Boy music (pre-2009 hiatus), all of the members have been doing solo work, including bassist Pete Wentz. For the most part, the solo endeavors weren't all that successful, so reuniting makes perfect sense.

The tour starts in Milwaukee on May 14, and includes stops in more than 30 cities before winding down in Nashville at the famed Ryman Auditorium on June 30. FOB also issued brief statement on their website, saying:

When we were kids the only thing that got us through most days was music. We needed to plug back in and make some music that matters to us. The future of Fall Out Boy starts now.

The frenzy definitely starts now, but I'm still not sure whether I'll jump on board. Any Fall Out Boy fans care to share opinions about the new song? Call me crazy, but I just don't think Fall Out Boy can "Save Rock and Roll" with it.
