Most of what I get in my email inbox is either work-related or spam. I jump for joy when I get an unsolicited email from family or a friend- you know, just to say hi. But then there are the handful of writers I love who write email newsletters. These are some of my favorites by far. They aren't about selling me anything. They're about keeping a presence in my inbox. They're about telling me what's up if I want to know. I can unsubscribe at any time, right? But I don't. Because they are awesome.
Here are some to go subscribe to now:
1. The Rumpus: Stephen from the Rumpus is a great writer and thinker. He sends them out every few days or so. They have his thoughts on whatever is going on for him, usually about making a movie or writing or the conversations he's having about art and writing with other artists and writers. It's well worth it to read them. They're pretty off the cuff, unpolished but focused, and I LOVE getting them.
2. Roden Explorer's Club: Craig Mod is a book futurist and really fun to read. His blog is great, but he's also got this new email list where he writes about what he's doing and where he's going and it's oozing with excitement about the future of books. It's such a welcome difference from the gloom and doom in the print world or the constant bickering of the online retail and ebook world. It's about adventure, exploring, and hope. Go subscribe.
3. Noah Kagen's ODORK newsletter: Ok, so this isn't a writing one exclusively, but Kagen is funny and honest and cuts to the core. It's a bit of Seth Godin and James Altucher combined, but from a late 20-something who has made and lost millions in the startup world. It's fun to hear his take on the world, and the nuggets of wisdom he drops are sweet.
