Choosing the right walking shoes
Walking is great because, unlike many sports and hobbies, it doesn't require a lot of specialized clothing and equipment. At the most basic level, you can go for a walk in just about whatever you happen to be wearing at the time. However, if you want to walk more often and with less chance of injury (to yourself and your Good Shoes) you will want to pick out a decent pair of walking shoes.
If you hear the phrase "walking shoes" and think of thick, orthopedic-looking old-fashioned shoes like a nurse might have worn in the 1980s, you are behind the times! Walking shoes are as vibrant and as varied in style as running shoes. There are walking shoes available for any style or fashion need.
Why buy a pair of specialized walking shoes? First, because you can find shoes that will handle your walking conditions. If you walk on trails, you may want shoes that are mud-proof. If you walk in bad weather, then rain-proof shoes are a must. And if you walk on gravel or other uncertain footing, walking shoes can help provide stability and traction compared to most street shoes.
Walking shoes can also help correct stride issues. Look at a pair of your most well-worn shoes: are they particularly worn on either the inside or the outside of the heel? If so, then you have issues with pronation or supination. Walking shoes provide structural support to help keep you walking on an even keel.
Most importantly, be sure you do NOT choose running shoes for walking. Running shoes are designed to cushion the pounding of a run, and all that extra cushioning will really mess up your walk. Walking long distances in running shoes often results in knee and calf pain which can be avoided by investing in a good pair of walking shoes.
