Bryant believes Lakers will make the playoffs.

Below .500 and still getting press

I’ll admit by writing this article I’m a complete hypocrite and tool. I am also part of the problem. The fact is though, large market teams, regardless of whether or not they are good, will always make the headlines. While the Lakers were already in the headlines all week for the untimely passing of their owner, Jerry Buss, apparently that was not enough for Kobe Bryant and crew.

With the All-Star break having just passed, the NBA season is now in full swing. The top teams are already locking down divisional wins and playoff spots, while those who may break into the top eight are either seeing their season come together, or completely falling apart.

The Lakers are one of those teams on the cusp. In a not atypical move, Kobe Bryant made a public announcement that he believers the Lakers will make the playoffs. Quick to back him were Dwight Howard, Steven Nash and head coach Mike D’Antoni. Though this was expected, the surprise best Laker headline came at the hands of Mark Cuban.

Dallas Mavericks eccentric owner stated on Friday he thinks the Lakers should use their remaining amnesty clause on Kobe Bryant. In regards to this idea, he said, “When I say amnesty Kobe, I don’t think they’d do it, but they got some choices to make.”

While the notion is pretty ridiculous, the Lakers ownership didn't see it as a laughing manor. They called Cuban’s comments, “inappropriate.” Bryan himself did find humor in the situation, though, chuckling while saying, “I bet he did,” in regards to Cuban offering up the advice. Cuban has yet to issue an apology over the statement.

Whether the Lakers take Cuban’s advice or not, they are soon to be hit with huge luxury tax fines at the beginning of next season. Using the amnesty clause this off-season would waive off the luxury tax associated with amnestied player’s salary.
