Affordable Eats and Veggie Treats in NYC

With so many restaurants offering vegetarian and vegan menu items these days, it's never been easier to eat healthy away from home. Sometimes, however, those of us who prefer our foods veggie-rich and animal-friendly want to patronize establishments that feel exactly the same. The problem? Vegan and vegetarian restaurants can be pricy. Luckily, there are some great cafes and restaurants right here in NYC for healthy eaters on a budget.

Wild Ginger
Reputed for their die-hard love of seitan and tofu, Wild Ginger offers a variety of strictly vegan dishes from Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea. Their menu includes such delicious edibles as mango soy protein with vegetables in plum sauce and Malaysian curry stew, as well as teas, coffees and desserts. The service is typically a little cold but quick and the quality of the food – at around $5 to $15 – more than makes up for any lack of social niceties.

Taim
Located in both NoLita and the West Village, Taim is perhaps one of the city's most beloved spots for hungry vegetarians. Their world famous felafel is gluten free and made fresh from “traditional middle-eastern recipes with a gourmet twist.” They also offer salads, sandwiches, sides dishes and desserts at a price range of $3 to $12. Side note: If you're looking to quench your thirst, their ginger-mint lemonade is simply divine.
