Bubbles, author insight, and the network effect
Bublish and the future of book discovery
The future of online book search is just starting, and it's pretty exciting right out of the gates. One of the big findings from my survey last week was that people typically get recommendations for books from friends offline, but then go shop for those books online.
When I talked to Bublish founder Kathy Meis, she already knew that, and plenty more. In fact, she founded a book discovery company around her extensive experience and understanding of how people search for and buy books. On her Twitter account she calls herself a "Serendipity Sage," which I love! She was kind enough to email me her thoughts on the future of book search and talk about what Bublish is doing to help readers find books they'll love.
Kathy told me:
"Current online book discovery isn't really cutting it. Readers continue to search for books in the real world, even if they buy them online. We're out to change that with Bublish. Our mission is to provide writers with the tools they need to find, engage and keep in touch with their readers throughout their writing career. For readers, we're recreating a bookstore-like browsing experience online. This requires a new type of sampling tool. We call it the book bubble:
"Authors can enrich their excerpts through the bubble's "author insight." Here is where authors share the stories behind their stories -- kind of like a director's cut for books.
Bubbles are also designed for today's visual, social Web. They allow authors to create original and highly engaging content in seconds and share it across multiple social channels where readers can enjoy it and share it with their networks.
Over time, this “network effect” helps authors start conversations with new readers and build their fan base."
