All the free audio books you want
About 20 years ago, I was on winter break from my university and I went to a temp agency asking if they had any work for me during the six weeks I was on break. They sent me to a washing machine factory. My job was to put a screw and a bolt into part of the washing machine lid from 7:00 until 4:00 p.m. with a break for lunch. I would do a few thousand a day. It was alternately mind-numbing and zen-like.
After a few days of hearing the radio shows from the boom box my co-workers used, I realized I wanted to listen to something else. That's how I discovered audio books. I went to the library and there they all were- hundreds of discs and tapes I could check out for free. I could have books read to me by people who knew how to read well all day while I methodically put together washing machine lids.
I fell in love. I learned about Vince Lombardi and Leonardo Da Vinci. I explored history and fantasy genres. I remember catching myself looking forward to going to work so I could have some peace and quiet and just listen to my books.
Are you someone who listens to audio books? When my time at the factory was done, I still listened over the years when I would travel around the country in my car. Sometimes local radio just doesn't have the charm.
But it's been years since I listened to an audio book because I didn't know where to find them on the Internet. But of course, they are everywhere. The best place I've found to listen to them is Librophile.
Librophile.com (beta) offers a simple interface for finding completely legal free audiobooks and eBooks... Librophile.com maintains an extensive archive of over a million publications and is funded mostly by advertising.
They basically do the work of finding every available free audio book on the Internet and making it available on their site. If they don't have it, it probably isn't out there.
Have you used this or another audio book site? What do you think of audio books?
