America -- Fault and Default

Be the First to Comment!

Okay, last week the Gallop poll predicted that the Democrats were in for a whopping loss, with Republicans leading the Democrats in the generic congressional tracking poll by ten points. A historic high for the GOP. Yesterday in the newest poll, the GOP lead has been cut to zero, with each party tied at 46% among registered voters. But the GOP still has the enthusiasm advantage. GOP voters are more likely to vote.

Traditionally, people begin to pay attention to the mid-term elections after Labor Day, and to those folks who were ready to hand this government over to the Republican-Tea Party, America is saying: Not so fast!

Stopping the Republican Rabble and Barbarians

If the Congress should fall to the Republican rabble and barbarians, David Axelrod, President Obama's Master of the Horse, captain-general of political offense and defense, in so many words, warns, we could all become witnesses to a dark age of extreme misery.

Mr Axelrod warns a Republican Congress could be "more extreme than Bush."

America you've given me millions and now I'm wealthy.

America two campaign managers and a GOP candidate August 27th, 2008.

I can't spell my own thoughts.

America when will you start another oil war?

I miss building atom bombs.

America when will you be evangelical?

When will you be pro-life?

When will you raise taxes on the poor?

When will you be stupid enough for your thousands of Tea Party activists?

Catching Up: Firefly- Objects in Space

Be the First to Comment!

It figures that the last episode of Firefly (according to the story, at least) would be the one that would finally bring River Tam into the foreground. River is such a memorable character and such a fan-favorite that it's easy to forget just how little she factors into the series. She barely even appears in most of the 14 episodes and in the case of "Our Mrs. Reynolds" she doesn't even have a single line outside of one justifiably deleted scene. "Objects in Space" suggests that River would have become a far more prominent character in the second half of the first season, though she didn't get the chance to be so central until 2005 when Serenity hit theaters. Tragic as it is that such an interesting character spent most of the series on the sidelines, "Objects in Space" also demonstrates just how distracting River could be.

Mark David Chapman Denied Parole Again

Mark David Chapman, the individual who was convicted of the murder of rock icon John Lennon in 1980, was denied parole from his life sentence today, making this the sixth time his case has been reviewed. The three-person panel who decided to keep Chapman in prison had plenty of things to say about their decision. One stated, "Come on, man. You killed a freaking Beatle. And not just any Beatle, but one of the two that people really, really liked. That was about the worst thing you could have done in 1980. If Jesus had come back in 1980 and you had to kill either him or John Lennon, you'd have still been better off committing deicide." One of the other panelists followed this statement by saying, "Look at the world around you, Chapman. War. Disease. Economic strife. I'm pretty sure that's all your fault. Forget Obama, if John Lennon had continued to contribute to this world, we'd be living in some kind of paradise by now." The third and final panelist said nothing except for her series of unintelligible wails as she clawed and kicked Chapman out of pure, enraged grief.

Ichneumon And Horntail Wasps: Clash of the Titans

Oh my, it must be Giant Wasp Season.  Hadn't you heard?  I started noticing giant wasps over the weekend.  Not just regular wasps, I'm accustomed to (for example) mud dauber wasps.  I'm talking GIANT wasps, about the size of my pinkie finger, no lie.

The first thing I did was Google these monsters.  I mean, after the part where I ran inside squealing in terror, obviously.  The bad news: there are several kinds of giant wasps you might encounter.  The good news: most of them don't sting.

It's Not Amish, And I Didn't Give It To Friends

1 New Comment: Join In!

Amish Friendship Bread is sort of a cross between a coffee cake and a chain letter.  The bread is based on a sourdough starter, albeit one that is fed with flour, sugar, and milk instead of a "regular" starter fed only with flour and water.

The idea behind Amish Friendship Bread is that you bake two loaves, give one to a friend, along with a portion of the starter.  Frankly this is the kind of obligation-heavy gifting that I frown upon.  I don't know many people who would be grateful to receive the gift of sourdough starter unasked.

Starter takes a fair amount of work.  Yes, it makes a better bread than what you can find in the stores.  But I think it's instructive to consider why we all started buying bread from the store in the first place.  And I say this as someone who has been baking my own bread exclusively for the last two years or so.

Long ago, when I was new to the internet, I fell in with a batch of Canadians.

No one is really sure how it happened, but this one particular role-playing/fanfic USENET newsgroup was at least 50% Canadian.  Maybe more like 80% depending on who was active and who had gone away for a few months.

At the time, I knew virtually nothing about Canada, much less about Canadians.  But they schooled me, oh yes they did.
