Revision: Tank Girl

These days, comic book adaptations get the A-list treatment. Major directors get attached to them early, big-name stars camp it up for big paychecks and their budgets are massive. They're either summer blockbusters like Spider-Man or they're arthouse films like Sin City and Watchmen. Even when they bomb they're given a fair shake in the initial marketing push. Such was not the case back in 1995 when Rachel Talalay decided to adapt the British punk comic Tank Girl for the screen. Back then comics got the same treatment as video games in the film industry. The result was a huge box office flop (grossing roughly $20 million less than the budget) and possibly even the derailment of an otherwise promising career for star Lori Petty. So, what was wrong with Tank Girl and what could have been done to fix it?

Craigslist Files #89: CENSORED

Be the First to Comment!

Ah, what a strange and irritating journey it has been. I was wondering how long the folks at craigslist were going to do the Internet equivalent of sitting in the corner and pouting. Those of you who frequent the site might have noticed that, at least on United States pages, the highly contentious Adult Services section was blocked out with a big, old-fashioned CENSORED label. As of today, that item is gone and it seems to have taken AS with it.

The Medical Career Track

"Take one of these potato-sized pills and call me in the morning.""Take one of these potato-sized pills and call me in the morning."In my quest to get to the top of every single career track, I ventured onto the Medical track this week.  There were some odd occurrences, which were probably just coincidence.

For example, this is the first time I have been offered the chance to switch career tracks halfway through - and I got that offer repeatedly.

At least four times, the game asked if I wanted to switch my Sim over to the other career (Science, if memory serves).

Keebler Fudge Shoppe Coconut Dreams

What does "chewy" mean?  It sounds like a stupid question, doesn't it?  But it's one I've been contemplating for several days.

"Chewy" inherently means "difficult to chew."  If something puts up no resistance, you would never say it was chewy.  Taffy for example puts up a big fight.  Taffy is chewy.

But there is a difference between something that's "chewy" and something that's just plain old "tough."  And I am very sad to report that these cookies are just plain old "tough."

Larry Flynt Calls For Return Of The ERA

Be the First to Comment!

I have to admit, I was a little surprised to see such strong feminist writing coming from the mouth of infamous Hustler publisher (and free speech advocate) Larry Flynt.  But there it is, in the Huffington Post, for all to see.

The quintessentially 1970s Flynt calls for a return of the Equal Rights Amendment.  The Equal Rights Amendment was THE issue of the 1970s.  It was bigger than the Tea Party and Obama's health care reform combined.  It divided the country for over ten years.  It would have amended the Constitution to give women equal rights, and I am sad to say that it failed.

The ERA would have guaranteed women equal rights, "not to be abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

"River Monsters" Tackles the Lake Iliamna Monster

Be the First to Comment!

I hadn't watched Animal Planet's show River Monsters until I ran across a marathon over the holiday weekend.  I don't much care for "let's hunt 'em" shows, but River Monsters impressed me as being more of a travelogue than a hunting show.  And the host's insistence on releasing the caught fish unharmed sealed the deal.

After watching two episodes, the third turned out to land square in cryptozoological territory.  The first episode I saw was about the Giant Snakehead, the second about the Goliath Tigerfish, and the third was about the Lake Iliamna monster.

Those scientists and researchers are at work again, busting their brains to come up with stuff. that --Well!

A survey, reported in yesterday's, (Tuesday), edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, of "50,000 Americans conducted in 2008 and 2009 for the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index that included questions on people's day-to-day happiness and their overall life satisfaction, (concluded) that Happiness got better as income rose but the effect leveled out at $75,000.. Their overall sense of success or well-being continued to rise as their earnings grew beyond that point."

But $75K is the happiness point, below that we're all miserable?

No reasons for concern, says NASA

Item from the Associated Press -- "NASA says two small asteroids discovered just days ago will zip harmlessly past Earth on Wednesday ..."

Yup. Discovered just a few days ago.

What else would they tell us? I don't ever expect to see a bulletin like this: 'Issuing non-bulletins from an abandon mine shaft, NASA brass have no comment on that giant shadow covering our planet earth.'

The AP item concludes -- "Asteroid 2010 RX30, thought to be 32 to 65 feet long, will pass within 154,000 miles of Earth shortly before 3 a.m. PDT Wednesday. The second one, dubbed 2010 RF12, will fly by about 11 hours later at a distance of about 49,000 miles. NASA says the second one is 20 to 46 feet long."

Huh, huh.
