The Texas Rangers 'Brand' (1)

......=== What's In A Brand, Dept. ===

A few months ago, we did a seminar on the concept of "brand" in Corporate America.

How much do you think you know about branding?  Test yourself with a question first:  what would you estimate that the Coca-Cola "brand" is worth, in cash money?

In other words, supposing Coca-Cola had to change its name to Zesti-Cola, use green instead of red, and change its font and swirl and contour bottle.  It did get to keep all of its factories, distribution lines, management, etc etc.

=== Hidden Dynamics ===

When the first concrete rumor came up -- Hicks and Ramos -- cyber-Seattle's reaction was that this was (1) misinformation, no way Lee is worth that, or (2) Zduriencik better take that within 24 hours or it proves he's a moron....

SSI's and MC's reaction was that Zduriencik should turn it down.  Neither Hicks nor Ramos were likely to be difference-makers.

Youtube Nation: Vuvu-hell-a

I'm sorry, Discovery Channel's hopelessly lame attempt to have an Internet presence, that didn't even begin to explain the cultural monstrosity that is the vuvuzela. For those of you who are blissfully unaware of the vuvuzela and its awful contribution to society, it is a long, now typically plastic horn that is capable of making only one note and that note is a sour one. South African soccer... er, football... um... hold on a second. On the one hand, I recognize that a lot of my readers are American like me, so calling the sport "football", however accurate, is still a bit confusing. I also recognize that the Internet is an international place, so it may be appropriate to call the sport "football" in deference to the rest of the world. But since I absolutely hate this silly argument and I've never seen the lasting appeal of that sport, I've decided to henceforth refer to it as Kickie-Snore. Right, now where were we? The vuvuzela has found its way into the global vocabulary by way of South African Kickie-Snore fans who brought them along for the World Cup. Originally the instrument was crafted out of the horn of a wild beast called a kudu and was a method for calling far-away tribesman back to the village. So, it's pretty much a South African shofar only not as good.

......Smoak, two pitchers, and a position player?

More fun than Thursday afternoon in the Carribbean.  Well, okay, but still.

.............

Despite my throwaway line about 1 Montero over 50 Smoaks, Smoak is 80-90% of Montero and if the secondary players blow away the Yankees', yes you take the Ranger package.

Jungle Fever: Race Traitors and One Bedroom Apartments (Part One)

Just so we’re all on the same page, jungle fever is a term used to describe a white person lusting after a black person. Yes, everything about it is racist. Black folks don’t (all) live in jungles. But what’s the term for a black person lusting after a white person?

Oddly enough, that idea was discussed during one of the final Party Down episodes from a few weeks back. Any number of answers like, Continental Fever and Euro-Fever work, but not too well.

......As of 2:17 pm, the M's turn down Montero, Adams and a 3rd prospect (possibly McAllister), based on questions about an ANKLE on the #2 player?!

Five scenarios:

1.  Capt Jack is remorselessly wringing the sponge dry on the Yankees and, shortly, we'll see a reconfig on the package (Sherman said the NYY even talked 4 players with Montero in one structure).

...

2.  Sell the sizzle, not the steak, dept:  somebody called with an offer that actually does blow away the Yankees' offer (e.g. Smoak and Scheppers).

No Blame for North Korea

Sometimes it’s better to look at the big picture and make a concession or two so that your long-term goal will get accomplished. And if you’re an international diplomat dealing with an unprovoked sinking of a warship in the midst of major international nuclear negotiations, well, there is plenty of room to make things go as smoothly as possible. And if it just so happens that the country you are negotiating with is the same as the country that probably sunk the warship, well, you have to decide whether you want to blame them for what you are pretty sure they did or try to get them to agree with you on the nuclear thing.

The Octopus Likes Spain

So now the world is turning to the Octopus? Well, not as a snack, but as a predictor of important events, important to the world's bookies, and to the people of Spain and Holland, who may have a keen interest in what the Octopus has to say / or  -- may be not.

Green For Green.

I noticed something this week- Obama has started to throw more money in the direction of the green energy initiatives. What was just a few hundred million dollars in his State of the Union speech across the entire industry is turning into multiple promises of billions of dollars. This most recent one is to extend a manufacturing credit by $5 billion to help create more private investment in clean energy. That is serious money, and I hope that Silicon Valley and the rest stand up and take notice. Obama will not be handing out money like this to clean energy forever- I believe in his political savvy, and I know that he is doing it as part of a larger plan around the BP crisis. He will include moves like this in some sweeping statements come election time:
