I Believe In EYE, Not In CT% (part 1)

......This one definitely needs its own thread, because this would be a tool for the carry toolbelt if true.

Dr. K, Taro, G-Money and umpteen cyber-grandmasters piled on to agree that high K's in the minors are, if not a guarantee of failure, then certainly a giant red flag.

Excellent saber discussion.

=== Jack Cust ===

For example, w/r/t #6 above, Jack Cust fanned an average of 179 times per 550 AB's in the minors -- and a lot of that was as an old (experience) player in the minors, outmatching young pitchers!

Cust fanned one time every 3.07 AB's career, in MiLB, and for this reason was airily waved off by the same amigos who waved off Ryan Howard.

I managed to stay on track!

I stayed on track yesterday!  That's the whole key to getting started on a nutrition plan... starting with such a spark that you see results soon.  Results keep you motivated.  The better the results, the more the motivation.  Well, I'm motivated.  I lost 1 lb. yesterday!

It's like a vicious circle when you just play at dieting or eating right.  If you dont drop enough calories out of your diet to see results, then you don't have a reason to continue.  I've done this so many times, thinking I'm "dieting" but not losing weight.  It's so discouraging!  You know when this usually ends is when I start keeping a journal of everything I eat and counting the calories.  Sometimes it's a real eye opener, and I think, "No wonder you're not losing weight!"

England vs. Australia, Natwest Series, 2nd ODI

Be the First to Comment!

The question on everybody's mind was, "Can lightning strike twice?" Like the truism, it can happen, but you still don't want to put money on it. England were 1 up in the series, already some way to erasing the humiliation of last year's 6-1 thrashing. Australia have never been used to the taste of defeat, and the strategic placement of this series - after the World Cup final loss to England and before the Ashes - meant that every result would be seen in a larger context. Being one down to England added pressure - and incentive - on Australia to draw blood.

Murali Announces His Retirement from Test Cricket

Be the First to Comment!

Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, one of the most controversial and accomplished figures in cricket, announced that the upcoming Test match against India in Galle, Sri Lanka, will be his last. Choosing to concentrate on the shorter formats of the game, Murali will walk away after 133 tests. His figures currently stand at a record 792 wickets, a best-innings return of 9/51, a best-match haul of 16/220, and an average of 22.71, with 66 five-wicket sets and 22 ten-wicket sets.

The figures, impressive, legendary and record-breaking as they are, tell only half the story. He holds the record for the most wickets in international Test & ODI cricket, has taken more five-fors than any other bowler in history, and was called the "best bowler ever" in the 2002 edition of the Wisden Cricketer's Almanac. Wisden also called him "the leading cricketer in the world" in 2006. He's taken a 5-for against every Test-playing country, and has taken 50 or more wickets against all of them - England, Australia, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand and Zimbabwe.  He's the only player to have taken 10 or more wickets in four consecutive games, and he's done that on two occasions. "b(owled) Muralitharan" is the most common dismissal in Test cricket. Matthew Hayden and Kevin Pietersen have singled out Murali as the toughest bowler they've faced.

Paul Auster's Smoke or How to Lose Six Grand

Be the First to Comment!

Paul Auster’s has made a career out of showing his readership the minutiae of meaninglessness in an array of novels. But the man’s also made a few stabs at the film industry when not otherwise engaged with translating the work of French poets and fiction writers.

Following the long tale of Smoke’s narrative is a bit difficult. At first viewers are led to believe the story’s set to focus on a corner store, a smoke shop amongst other things, helmed by Harvey Keitel’s Auggie character. And while that’s not completely wrong, it’s not wholly correct either.

Auditing Undocumented Employers

There are a lot of issues around immigration- what should we do about it, who has the authority to make those calls, and what kind of federal legislation should and will we have to deal with the growing problem in the future. With Arizona just passing their law and it looking to go into effect later this month, the immigration issue has come to the forefront of the nation’s consciousness. Everyone seems to have an opinion, and in fact, 59% of everyone seems to agree with the law that Arizona passed. So if there is wide and majority support for deporting people who are undocumented rather than admitting the reality of how our economic and social world actually runs, what is the government really going to do about it?

Where's the corn?

Be the First to Comment!

It seems that we are hitting the proverbial wall with the demand for corn outgrowing the ability of U.S. farmers to even grow it. While the promises of ethanol and other biofuels make a lot of sense in moving away from fossil fuels, they do take a serious amount of corn to make happen. Couple that with the fact that we use corn in many, many forms in a huge percentage of our food, and we find ourselves in a position where we have created a gigantic demand for a crop that takes a lot of land and resources to grow. We simply do not have the space.

Olympia Snowe wants to "Get it right."

Be the First to Comment!

The Senate is in deep negotiations for the new financial reform bill, and the Democrats need to get 3 of the Republican senators to agree with them and vote for it. No easy task for any bill, and certainly not made any easier by the idea that the bill is focused on the future of our financial industry. One of the big hopes of the Democrats is to get moderate Republican Olympia Snowe of Maine to vote with them- but she says she has not decided which way she wants to vote and that the most important thing is… “to get it right.”

“It’s a big issue, and the most important thing is to make sure we get it right,” Snowe told Reuters. “I’m still looking at it- it’s this big.”

David Welsh: More Dug Up Psych Nonesense from the Midwest

Be the First to Comment!

There’s an ever broadening cast of Ohio rock adherents that will basically voch for anything remotely bizarre from the state round on the ends and hi in the middle. Joe Walsh not withstanding, there’re unquestionably a number of reasons to dig for anything from that phenomenal state – CLE stuff and downer Columbus work being clutch. It seems, though, that as time wears on and folks find or revisit some of those albums – or convince the old guys to perform again – a new swell of appreciation reveals itself.
